A by-product of the mushroom growing industry.

Mushroom compost is ideal for increasing the fertility of your garden soil. It is weed, pesticide and disease free. Mushroom compost is organic compost with a crumbly texture, a dark brown colour, and an earthy aroma. As well as nitrogen, phosphate and potassium, the compost also contains calcium, magnesium and iron, important nutrients for many plants. It’s ideal for mixing with soil to act as a light fertiliser, and to help retain moisture.

A highly effective soil conditioner for improving structure in heavy clay soils and adding humus to sandy and chalky soils.

Recommended rate of use for general soil improvement a 50mm layer should be spread over the area to be treated, then forked or rotavated in. A 75mm layer could be considered with very poor soils.

The mushroom is a choosy feeder and after cultivation a high level of nutrient remains in the compost which is available to green plants. After this the selected mushroom spawn is added to the compost and left to grow throughout the material. Cropping takes place over several weeks after which the compost is steam sterilized prior to its removal from the mushroom farm. Before collection from the mushroom farm, the compost is steam sterilised by the mushroom grower to guarantee that it contains no pests, diseases or weed seed. The material is approximately neutral with a pH of 6.3 to 6.8. It is a first class soil conditioner for all types of soil.
